Working for the Quest – at least as it is still in its beginning phases and much like the school from which it was born – can be a bit like sailing off in a ship you are still building. It's a bit hectic, a bit patched together, and requires a lot of personal motivation and effort from specific individuals. But, if you are reliable, are excited by the work, and care, you can end up being a big part of this small ship – and make a lot of good impact!

This page will go over what it means to work at The Quest, the different areas you can work in, and how you can get started. So let's go!

Wait. What the heck is The Quest?

We're glad you asked! The Minerva Quest is Minerva's independent student publication. We report on what's happening at Minerva and provide a platform for student voice and opinion. Watch the following video to learn more, and check out our website to read what we've published!

What's The Point?

The Quest exists for a few reasons. Here they are in three words

COMMUNICATION

We want to help students communicate their ideas – to other students in their class, and more importantly, to students in other classes, with whom we otherwise have little interaction. Minerva students are incredibly diverse, as are their opinions and ideas. We aim to provide a platform where students can share their ideas, and learn from others.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Minerva as an institution has little accountability, and often students can find they have little leverage. This is because – often – it actually is in our best interest to not make a stink, as reputation matters in such a young organization. Nonetheless, we need to make sure the administration is looking our for our best interests. As a functioning journalistic culture in a country in instrumental in holding politicians and governments accountable to their actions, so are we to the Minerva administration.

LEARNING

The Quest is dedicated to helping students learn more by doing. This means providing support for new writers, creating a space to practice skills like fundraising, business development, social media management, and more! Again, if you put in the effort, you can turn the Quest into what you want it to be, and you will learn more than you could imagine along the way.

What Do You Get?

Working with The Quest, as we mentioned above, can be hectic. But here's what that means: you learn a crap ton. You can go from making a small vlog that no one cares about, to managing a team of 5+ across 4 countries. You can go from merely expressing interest in a small side project, to becoming in charge of entire reporter groups. You can go from wanting to create a small podcast, to working with other Minervans over months to share their stories and publish it all on Spotify. Or, you can just keep doing whatever it is you like doing – writing an article here or there, offering some assistance on any projects that interest you.

You can do so much! That's the beauty of an organization at its beginning – there's always something to do and there's always something to learn. And with an organization like the Quest, you can usually alter your projects to fit what you want to do and get out of it. It's a small ship – but as our good friend Stephen Kosslyn likes to say: small ships are a hell of a lot more agile.

There are also some other perks:

  1. Public-facing portfolio page on the website, great for resume building and professional visibility
  2. Access to and relationships with those in classes above and below you through staff meetings
  3. Consistent professional editing, workshopping, assistance – guidance to increase writing skills
  4. Projects and experience for a portfolio or resume, as well as recommendations from peers

So, What Can You Do?

We thought you'd never ask!

The Quest is always changing so what we need is always changing as well. It might be that we advertise a project on The Week, on Facebook, or in our Newsletter and get someone to help just that once.
